My dad and grandfather have done wordworking as a hobby for over 100 years combined, and swear by it. Works every time.Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06067584114071637056noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6552422419133819877.post-53032105917972853562013-04-23T14:13:51.805-05:002013-04-23T14:13:51.805-05:00Robert, I had a new can of the stuff and, like mos...Robert, I had a new can of the stuff and, like most these days, need to pinch a penny until is squeals. But I don't think I'll be using it again. I managed to get a pretty good finish by setting the clear coat can in front of a heater until it started to stink but you are right, I should have just thinned the stuff and gone on about my business.TJhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03459069175481821975noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6552422419133819877.post-53585611665931920772013-04-23T09:59:01.411-05:002013-04-23T09:59:01.411-05:00Oh, and don't take those directions on the can...Oh, and don't take those directions on the can so literally... If the varnish is dragging, add a little thinner (or Penetrol...). Once you get the right consistency, you'll know it, and recognize it in the future.

bobRobert Salnickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17236481906016930762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6552422419133819877.post-66378343334977190882013-04-23T09:56:52.186-05:002013-04-23T09:56:52.186-05:00TJ -

Good varnish does an amazing amount of self-leveling, even outside, in the sun and wind.

bob
s/v Eolian
SeattleRobert Salnickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17236481906016930762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6552422419133819877.post-17072565978412149022013-04-19T03:46:30.675-05:002013-04-19T03:46:30.675-05:00Hi TJ

I think part of my problem is the stuff is just too thick - it doesn't seem to flow at all. Yet the can brims with warnings not to thin with anything.

I used to be a part time airplane painter and dearly wish I had access to a spray booth and equipment. Still, another day or two and I think the table will be about as good as I can get it. Which will be a good thing, I need to get the project done so I can move on to leaks and winches and hates and ... and ... and. Who knows, someday soon we might actually sail this thing, if I can remember how to get it off the dock.
